What Age Should My Child Start Piano Lessons?
"Is my child ready for piano lessons?" It's one of the questions we hear most at Feeling Groovy Music School. Usually from a parent whose little one keeps wandering over to every keyboard they see. The honest answer, after years of teaching kids: there's a lovely sweet spot, and it might be a touch later than you'd expect.
The sweet spot: around 8 to 10 years old
If we had to name the age where piano really clicks for most kids, it's between eight and ten. By then, reading is well established (a huge help for learning notes), hands are strong enough for proper technique, and children can concentrate, practise a little on their own, and feel genuine pride when a piece comes together. Students who start around this age tend to progress quickly and, best of all, stick with it. It's a wonderful window.
Can younger children start? Absolutely.
Plenty of five, six and seven-year-olds are itching to play, and we happily welcome students from age five. At this age it's all about play, games, favourite songs and lots of encouragement. Building a joyful first friendship with music rather than drilling technique. An early start can be brilliant; just know that the "serious progress" phase usually kicks in a bit later, and that's completely normal.
Signs your child is ready
Age matters less than these little signals:
They gravitate to any piano or keyboard they can find
They can focus on one activity, a puzzle, a book, a drawing for a good amount of time
They're reading confidently (a big plus for note-reading)
They ask about music, or sing, hum and drum on everything!
If that sounds like your child, they're ready for a trial lesson.
What if my child is older - or a teenager?
Even better in many ways. Kids who start at 11, 13 or 15 often race ahead, because they concentrate for longer and practise independently. And it's never too late for grown-ups either. Some of our most dedicated piano students are adults learning for the pure joy of it.
How to set them up for success
You don't need a grand piano in the lounge room. A simple keyboard with full-size keys is a great start. Keep practice short and sweet, ten happy minutes most days beats a forced hour on Sunday. Celebrate the small wins! The goal in the first year isn't perfection; it's building a friendship with music that lasts a lifetime.
